How to Write a Social Media Bio That Converts

Your bio is the most-read piece of copy your business owns and almost nobody edits it more than once. Every person who taps your profile from a Reel, a tagged post or a Google search reads those few lines before deciding whether you are worth following or worth contacting. For a local business, that decision happens in about three seconds.

‍ ‍

The Only Job Your Bio Has

A bio is not a mission statement and it is not a place for your brand values. It answers three questions in order: what do you do, who is it for, and what should I do next. If a stranger cannot answer all three after reading it once, the bio is not working.

We audit a lot of Charleston business profiles and the most common failure is abstraction. Curating unforgettable moments tells nobody anything. Charleston wedding photographer, full-day coverage, booking 2027 tells them everything they need in nine words.

‍ ‍

Lead With Category and Location

For any local business, the first line should contain the thing you do and the place you do it. This is not just for humans — Instagram search and Google both index bio text, and a Charleston boutique that says Charleston boutique in the bio is findable in a way that one calling itself a curated lifestyle destination is not.

Put the location in plain terms. Charleston, SC beats Lowcountry, and both beat a palm tree emoji. Save the personality for line two.

‍ ‍

Line Two Is Where You Earn the Follow

Once someone knows what you are, give them a reason to stay. This is where specificity does the work. Not the best coffee in Charleston, which every coffee shop claims, but roasted on Johns Island, cortado specialists, dog-friendly patio. Concrete details are credible and generic superlatives are not.

A useful test: could a competitor down the street copy your line two word for word and have it be equally true? If yes, rewrite it.

‍ ‍

Make the Call to Action a Real Instruction

Link in bio is not a call to action. Tell people exactly what happens when they tap. Book a table, get a quote in 24 hours, see this week menu, join 4,000 Charleston locals on the list. The more specific the promise, the higher the click-through, and the difference is not marginal — we routinely see click rates double from this change alone.

Make sure the destination matches the promise. Sending someone who tapped Book a table to a homepage with no reservation button is the fastest way to waste the click you just earned.

‍ ‍

Platform-Specific Adjustments

  • Instagram: 150 characters, so every word has to earn its place. Use the name field strategically — it is searchable, so Palm Social | Charleston Social Media beats just the brand name.

  • TikTok: 80 characters. Be blunt. Category, location, one hook.

  • LinkedIn: The headline is the bio equivalent and it has room. Lead with who you help and what outcome you deliver, not your job title.

  • Google Business Profile: Not technically a bio, but the description field matters enormously for local search and most Charleston businesses leave it default.

‍ ‍

Things to Cut Today

Cut the founding year unless heritage is genuinely part of your value. Cut strings of unrelated emoji, which read as clutter and break screen readers. Cut hashtags in the bio; they almost never drive discovery and they eat characters. Cut awards more than three years old. Cut any sentence that could describe a business in any city.

‍ ‍

Review It Quarterly

Bios go stale silently. Seasonal businesses in Charleston especially should be updating for what they want right now — booking spring weddings in February reads very differently from the same line in September. Put a recurring fifteen-minute calendar reminder on the first of each quarter to reread every bio you own out loud. If it sounds like something a person would actually say, it is probably working.
