Trending Audio: A Guide for Charleston Brands
Trending audio is the cheapest reach available on Instagram and TikTok, and most Charleston businesses use it badly. They either ignore it entirely and wonder why their video sits at two hundred views, or they slap whatever sound is popular onto footage it has nothing to do with. Both approaches waste good content.
Why Audio Affects Reach at All
Both platforms organize content partly by sound. When a sound is gaining traction, videos using it get surfaced to people browsing that sound and to people the algorithm has decided like that kind of content. Using a rising sound is a way of attaching your video to an existing current instead of starting from zero.
The window matters. A sound that already has two million videos is saturated and gives you nothing. A sound with a few thousand videos and climbing is where the advantage is. By the time a sound reaches the general public it is usually too late to benefit.
How to Find Sounds Before They Peak
Open the app as a consumer, not a marketer, for ten minutes a few times a week. If you hear the same sound three or four times in a scroll and it is not one you recognize from last month, it is rising.
On Instagram, sounds in the audio browser marked with an upward arrow are flagged as trending. Tap into one and check how many Reels use it. Under twenty thousand is usually still early.
Save sounds when you find them, even if you have no idea what to do with them yet. Building a saved-audio bank means that when you have footage ready you are choosing from options instead of scrambling.
The Fit Problem
Here is where most local businesses lose. A sound carries a tone. Some are comedic, some are nostalgic, some are dramatic, plenty are built around a specific joke or format. If you put a sarcastic audio over a sincere video about your family business, the mismatch registers even if the viewer cannot articulate why.
Before using a sound, watch five videos that use it well. Understand what the format is doing. If the sound depends on a punchline at the four-second mark, your edit has to hit that mark.
If nothing about a trending sound fits your brand, skip it. A well-chosen non-trending track with good pacing will outperform a forced trend every time. We tell clients that trending audio is an accelerant, not a foundation.
Licensing Is Not Optional
Business accounts do not have access to the full commercial music library that personal accounts do. If you are running a business profile, some trending sounds will be unavailable, and using a workaround can get your video muted or pulled after the fact.
That is frustrating but it protects you. A restaurant that loses a video with forty thousand views because the audio was stripped has lost real money in reach. Stick to what is available to you in the business library, or use original audio.
Original Audio Is Underrated
For Charleston businesses there is a strong case for using your own sound. The ambient noise of a busy dining room. Waves at Folly. A bartender explaining a drink. A stylist talking through what they are doing.
Original audio does not borrow reach, but it builds something trending sounds cannot: a recognizable sense of place. It also means your video is not one of fifty thousand using the same clip, which matters when someone is scrolling a sound page and everything blurs together.
The strongest approach for most of our clients is a mix — trending audio on content designed for discovery, original audio on content designed to build relationship.
Move Fast or Do Not Bother
Trending audio has a shelf life measured in days, sometimes hours. If your approval process takes a week, trend-based content is not a realistic strategy for your business, and you are better off investing that effort in evergreen video.
That is a legitimate choice. Not every business needs to chase sounds. But if you are going to do it, build a workflow that lets you shoot, edit, and post within forty-eight hours.
