The Influencer Vetting Process We Use — and Why It Starts with Authenticity
Why We Don't Lead with Follower Count
When brands come to us asking for influencer help, the first question is almost always some version of: "How big of an influencer can we get?" It's a reasonable thing to wonder. But as former creators ourselves, we've learned that follower count is one of the least predictive metrics for actual campaign success.
We've seen accounts with millions of followers produce campaigns that moved zero product. We've seen micro-influencers with 8,000 deeply engaged followers drive significant results for a local Charleston business. The difference isn't the number — it's the relationship that creator has with their audience. And that's what we evaluate first.
What We Actually Look For
Our vetting process starts with the qualitative before it touches the quantitative. Here's what we look at when evaluating a creator for a client campaign:
Authenticity of their content
Does their feed feel like a real person, or does it feel like an ad channel? Are they showing up consistently with a clear point of view? Do their partnerships feel organic, or does every other post feel like a billboard? We can tell the difference quickly — because we've been creators ourselves, and we know what authenticity looks like from the inside.
Community engagement
A creator's relationship with their audience shows up in the comments. Are people having real conversations? Is the creator responding? Are the comments genuine, or do they look bot-generated? A creator with 10,000 followers and real conversations in every comment section is more valuable than one with 100,000 followers and 40 comments that say "great post!"
Alignment with the brand
Does the creator's lifestyle, aesthetic, and values actually connect with what our client is building? We're not looking for a perfect match — we're looking for a genuine connection that would feel natural to the creator's audience. If we can't tell the story of why this creator and this brand make sense together, we keep looking.
Past partnership behavior
How has the creator handled brand partnerships in the past? Did they integrate the content well? Did they maintain their voice? Did they follow through? We look at the full picture — not just the sponsored posts, but how those posts fit into the creator's broader content narrative.
Why This Matters for Charleston Businesses
Charleston has a growing and diverse creator community — but like any market, it includes creators who are genuinely influential and creators who have inflated their numbers through questionable tactics. Our job is to know the difference, and to connect our clients with creators who will actually move the needle.
Because our founders are part of the local creator community, we have real insight into who is building genuine audiences in Charleston — and who isn't. That local knowledge is something you simply can't get from an agency managing your influencer strategy from out of state.
The Right Partnership Changes Everything
When the right influencer talks about your brand to the right audience, the results can be remarkable. We've seen it happen for our clients — a single authentic post from a trusted local creator driving more inquiries than months of paid ads.
But getting there requires vetting, relationship-building, and a process built around authenticity rather than vanity metrics. That's what Palm Social brings to every influencer engagement we manage. Ready to find the right creators for your Charleston business? Let's start the conversation.
